Past artists looking at
everyday objects
Marcel Duchamp
Marcel Duchamp was raised in Normandy, France, by his mother and
father who were both art fanatics. Marcel created his first piece of artwork
when he was just fifteen years old, he named it Landscape at Blainville (1902) which reflected his interest of the
work by Claude Monet.
The term ‘readymade’ was coined by Marcel Duchamp himself when
he decided to make a collection based around everyday objects. One of his most
famous pieces of work would be the Fountain (1917), which was deemed ‘immoral’
by the Society of Independent Artists, and further rejected to be displayed.
Bicycle Wheel (1913) is a readymade by Duchamp, consisting of a bicycle fork with a front wheel mounted upside-down on a wooden
stool.
